I was the lead designers on this project and worked with a marketing specialist, art director, and a developer from Cult Ideas to bring this app to reality. My role was branding, logo design, UX design, and UI design.
This project drew upon the curiosity of youth to get engaged with code but also needed to be accessible and useable for adults. Therefore, the app and website focused on a clean aesthetic and intuitive interface.
We liked the idea of a mascot as the central component of the visual brand, which brought us to hint at the lovable monkey from the eighties, Curious George.
Driving new users to the website and app was important. Developing a user flow that included an inbound marketing process meant external marketing sources felt integrated and seamless to the experience on the app and website.
Developing an interface that considers a broad range of ages (ranging from students to working professionals) meant a simple and engaging dynamic for the content. We stayed clean but used colour and motion to make components stand out.
The goal for this project was to meet AA acessibility standards with type size, contrast, screen-reader alt text, and two visual changes to any interactive content (hover states changed by colour and motion).
An onboarding process was essential to introducing user-specific dynamic content. This process allowed the user to choose content by location, persona, and interests.
A navigation that was as intuitive for an 8 year old as it was for a 38 year old was a difficult objective. After testing and iteration, we landed on something that our users feel is “cool and easy”.
The app and website project was a successful effort to bring coding education to a wide audience, including both youth and adults. As the lead designer on the project, I played a crucial role in establishing the branding, logo design, UX design, and UI design.
Our focus on a clean aesthetic and intuitive interface helped to make the app and website accessible and user-friendly for all users. The decision to incorporate a mascot, inspired by the lovable monkey Curious George, added a playful and engaging element to the visual brand.
Overall, this project demonstrates the value of a well-designed and user-friendly app and website in facilitating learning and engaging users of all ages.
